Evaluation of Microfinance Banks' Funding on Small and Medium Scale Enterprises in Calabar, Cross River State
Abstract
This study carried out an Evaluation of Microfinance Banks’ funding of small and medium scale enterprises in Calabar, Nigeria. Econometric estimation technique was used to analyze the data. The result of the Ordinary Least Square (OLS) regression analysis indicates that Credit by Microfinance has a positive effect on Small and Medium Scale Enterprises proxied by Business Expansion (BEX) of SMEs in Calabar, Cross River State Nigeria. Credit by Microfinance (CMF) has a negative effect on Small and Medium Scale Enterprises proxied by Job Creation (JOC) by SMEs in Calabar, Cross River State Nigeria and the effect is not statistically significant (p>0.05). Savings Mobilization (SMB) has a positive effect on Small and Medium Scale Enterprises proxied by Business Expansion (BEX) of SMEs in Calabar, Cross River State Nigeria and the effect is statistically significant (p<0.05). Savings Mobilization has a positive effect on Small and Medium Scale Enterprises proxied by Job Creation (JOC) by SMEs in Calabar, Cross River State Nigeria and the effect is statistically significant (p<0.05). It was concluded that micro finance and savings mobilization does enhance the Job creation and expansion capacity of SMEs in the study area. It was recommended among others that microfinance bank should adopt similar strategies adopted by money deposit banks in deposit mobilization because it is by so doing that they will be able to grant quality loans to entrepreneurs which will lead to job creation in the economy.
